Congratulations! Our student have won the first prize in the National Mathematical Modeling Competition

The 19th China Graduate Mathematical Modeling Competition "China Optics Valley Huawei Cup" was held in October 2022, and the list of winners was recently announced. Master's student Luo Haiqiong from the Faculty of Data Science at City University of Macau, along with two other students from the University of Macau and Macau University of Science and Technology, teamed up to compete and ultimately stood out from 17970 participating teams, winning the national first prize.

The China Graduate Mathematical Modeling Competition is one of the themed events of the "China Graduate Innovation Practice Series Competition", guided by the Degree Management and Graduate Education Department of the Ministry of Education, and hosted by the China Academic Degrees and Graduate Education Society and the Youth Science and Technology Center of the China Association for Science and Technology. It is an academic competition aimed at conducting mathematical modeling application research for current graduate students. This competition attracts research teams from over 400 universities and research institutes around the world. After two months of rigorous review and evaluation by the expert committee, 197 teams were awarded first prize, 2400 teams were awarded second prize, and 3338 teams were awarded third prize.

The Faculty of Data Science at City University of Macau is committed to building and improving a multidisciplinary and integrated curriculum system, cultivating composite talents with theoretical and professional application backgrounds in data science and information technology. As a typical manifestation of interdisciplinary studies, undergraduate courses emphasize the cultivation of students' natural science knowledge, humanities knowledge, and foreign language skills necessary for engaging in intelligent service industry related work. They should be proficient in using information technology, big data, artificial intelligence and other skills, as well as basic knowledge of business and economics necessary for the modern service industry. They should also apply the theories, methods and skills learned to solve practical problems in the modern service industry. Graduate courses combine the needs of industry, urban governance, and government management for data analysis, cultivating composite senior talents with insights and organizational skills in data, big data development skills, application skills, intelligent business analysis skills, and data governance skills. They also have theoretical foundations in social sciences, humanities, engineering, and other disciplines, and apply data-driven decision-making technologies to various industries.

Award acceptance speech:

Student Luo Haiqiong from the Faculty of Data Science

Fight against numerical models again, seek for my beginning again. This competition has made me realize that firstly, opportunities are always reserved for those who are prepared. The numerical simulation competition has a tight schedule, difficult and heavy tasks, and we have made sufficient preparations for the competition. Before the competition, we read through the past year's real papers and excellent papers, which will help us better write the competition paper in the later stage. Secondly, persistence leads to victory. In the competition, we suffered from not having a way to solve the problem, but fortunately we persevered and ultimately won. Thirdly, team spirit is the most important guarantee for winning awards. The numerical simulation competition is conducted in groups, so mutual cooperation and teamwork among members are very important. Our group has a clear division of labor and actively cooperates with each other throughout the entire competition process, which is also an important reason for winning the award.
