Introduction

 

1. Programme​ background 

 

The Doctor of Philosophy in Data Science Programme (Chinese) is carefully designed taking into account global and national-level trends and needs. The professional scope covers many important fields such as data science, computing science, artificial intelligence, and databases. It aims to cultivate a group of people with solid theoretical foundation and outstanding innovative ability through research and practice who have data analysis and processing capabilities and the ability to carry out meaningful and original research. Comprehensive professional talents with strong research capabilities to meet the future demand for data science talents in various fields. The Faculty of Data Science of City University of Macau has a deep foundation and rich resources in the field of data science. In 2017, the faculty established the "Urban Governance Big Data Research Center" and has since launched a number of scientific research projects including "3D Urban Big Data Platform", "Smart Transportation", "Smart Tourism" and "Smart Buildings" project. A core academic group composed of experts from various disciplines has been established and is committed to promoting interdisciplinary cooperation. 

 

2. Cultivation Objectives 

 

The Doctor of Philosophy of Data Science Programme aims to equip graduates with the knowledge and skills of data analysis, management, and application through professional knowledge learning, project research, dissertation writing, etc., and to have the ability to use data analysis methods to solve problems in specific fields from an international perspective. In the future, you can engage in high-end data analysis and management work, professional research, etc. Research contents include urban big data management, data calculation and analysis, artificial intelligence data processing, visualization processing, etc. In order to realize the concept of high-level and international talent training, this course has set the following goals: 

 

  • To develop the specialization of academic programmes in accordance with the development of the times. 

  • To co-ordinate and take into account all levels of disciplines, and to cultivate the ability of multi-disciplinary scientific research. 

  • To closely integrate with the objectives of cultivating professional talents, and to focus on the cultivation of practical and innovative abilities. 

  • To establish a scientific research consciousness and cultivate solid basic analysis and research ability. 

  • To build up a professional teaching team to improve students' academic abilities and standards.

Illustration :

  1. Students must complete 1 basic compulsory course, 2 core compulsory major courses, and 4 elective courses during the study period and pass the courses assessment. Only those with passing grades can obtain course credits, a total of 21 credits. 

  1. After completing the compulsory and elective courses, each student must take the programme qualification exam before the end of the first semester of the second academic year. 

  1. After passing the programme qualification examination, you can start writing the Dissertation proposal. After passing the dissertation proposal , you can start writing the dissertation. During the period of writing the dissertation, students are required to participate in professional-related practical work under the guidance of their supervisors. The dissertation can be written in Chinese or English and totals 12 credits. 

  1. During the period of doctoral studies, students must publish at least two papers in academic journals recognized by City University of Macau; at least one of them is SCI Journal; be published as the first author or *second author in the following list:

  • SCI Journal or 

  • EI Journal or 

  • EI conference papers (included in IEEE Xplore, ACM, Springer) or 

  • Peking University Chinese Core N/Q, T/X Comprehensive Science and Technology refers to 120 Journals or 

  • The Computer Federation of China recommends international academic conferences and journals, and the Computer Federation of China recommends a directory of Chinese science and technology journals. 

  • Obtained international or national invention patent copyrights while studying 

Note: 

 

a. If the student is the second author, the supervisor must be the first author. 

b. "Co-first author" and "co-corresponding author" will not be counted in principle. 

c. All published articles must have City University of Macau as the first author and be published publicly. 

d. At least two published articles must be related to the research of the dissertation. 

e. Students must submit their acceptance certificate or email of article acceptance, and the college will review the publication of relevant graduation requirements. 

f. The above are the basic requirements of this faculty. 

 

  1. Students must participate in at least five academic activities recognized by the academic committee of the academic committee during their doctoral studies, totaling 1 credit. 

  1. Students who have passed the dissertation oral defense and obtained a total of 34 credits, and have not violated the regulations of the University, student can apply for the award of doctoral degree in accordance with the doctoral application procedures of the City University of Macau

4. Teaching requirements 

  1. Students are required to complete the study of three compulsory courses and four elective courses and sit for the examinations within the study period, and those who pass the courses will be awarded credits for the courses, totaling 21 credits. 

  1. After taking and completing the compulsory and elective courses, students must take the course qualification exam before the end of the first semester of the second academic year. 

  1. After passing the course qualification examination, students can start writing the dissertation proposal and the thesis (can be written in Chinese or English, 12 credits in total). Students are also required to participate in professional-related research and practical work during this period. 

  1. Students must participate in at least five academic activities and special research recognized by the academic committee during their doctoral studies, totaling 1 credit. 

  1. Students who have passed the dissertation oral defense and obtained a total of 34 credits, and have not violated the regulations of the University, may apply for the award of doctoral degree in accordance with the doctoral application procedures of the City University of Macau. 

 

5. Admission criteria 

Applicants must have a master's degree or equivalent. Priority will be given to applicants with prerequisite academic qualifications in computer science and technology, information science, statistics, software engineering, e-commerce, applied mathematics, econometrics and related majors. Applicants are required to take the entrance examination organized by City University of Macau and will be admitted on the basis of merit.
