Co-organised by the City University of Macau (CityU) and the Little Orange Digital Technology Joint Laboratory, the ‘Seminar on the Application of Artificial Intelligence in Healthcare Technology and Exhibition of Cardiac Ultrasound Intelligent Navigation System Technology’ was held today at the Ho Yin Conference Centre of CityU Taipa Campus. Experts and scholars in the field of artificial intelligence in healthcare from the Mainland and Macao were invited to discuss in-depth on the latest development of AI technology in healthcare, covering topics such as the clinical application and challenges of cardiac ultrasound intelligent navigation system, data privacy protection and the application of medical big data, etc. The conference aims to promote the development of artificial intelligence in healthcare between Macao and the Mainland. It aims to promote the co-operation between Macao and the Mainland in the production, research and development of AI medical technology, and to promote the innovation and development of such technology in the medical and healthcare field.

In his speech, The Director of Health Bureau of the Macao SAR Mr. Lo Iek, said that the SAR Government has always been committed to the application and development of smart healthcare. He hoped that this symposium could further expand the application of AI technology in the healthcare field, especially in shortening the waiting time for initial specialist consultations and emergencies, introducing intelligent equipment and optimising online service platforms, etc., so as to improve the quality and efficiency of healthcare services and to provide better and more convenient healthcare services for Macao citizens. He stressed that Macao had made a lot of progress in smart healthcare in recent years, which had significantly improved the experience of residents in seeking medical treatment and contributed to the building of a happy Macao and the advancement of the goal of ‘Healthy China’.
Member of the Legislative Assembly of Macao, Mr. Si Ka Lon said that the convergence of artificial intelligence and healthcare is a trend of the times, and Macao, with the advantages of ‘one country, two systems’ and a well-established healthcare system, has been actively attracting medical technology talents with an international outlook. The support of the national policy and the efforts of the SAR Government are promoting the development of smart healthcare, and the application of AI medical technology has a broad prospect. This event builds a platform for academic exchanges and promotes the intelligent transformation of healthcare, which will help optimise Macao's healthcare resources and improve the efficiency and quality of services, in line with the national strategy and the long-term interests of Macao.
Vice Rector Zhou Wanlei said that CityU has made significant progress in the areas of medical image analysis and health data modelling, and has set up a Joint Laboratory with Macau Little Orange Digital Technology to promote the integration of AI and healthcare, aiming to enhance the standard of primary healthcare services through industry-academia-research collaboration and innovation, and to provide better healthcare protection for the residents. In the future, CityU expects to strengthen its cooperation with mainland organisations to explore the direction of AI healthcare applications, promote the development of smart healthcare, and commit to the transformation of efficient and inclusive healthcare services.
Lu Weifeng, Vice Rector of Beihang University (BUAA), and Yang Han, Secretary General of the China Association of Rehabilitation Technology Transformation and Promotion (CARTTP), delivered speeches at the conference in an online format. Vice President Lu Weifeng said that with the in-depth implementation of the ‘Healthy China’ strategy and the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area Development Plan in recent years, the Macao Special Administrative Region (Macao SAR) has made remarkable achievements in the development of the health industry. This symposium provides a valuable platform for all parties to share the latest research results and promote the application of AI technology in primary healthcare management. Looking ahead, we expect to explore innovative solutions in the areas of intelligent equipment, data privacy protection and medical data analysis through cooperation with CityU and healthcare organisations, so as to jointly promote the construction of intelligent healthcare and enhance the health standard of residents.
Secretary General Yang Han pointed out that the global healthcare industry is facing many challenges, and AI technology is profoundly changing the life of the society, especially in the healthcare field, which shows great potential. As an important bridge connecting the Mainland and the world, Macao's unique geographical and policy advantages provide favourable conditions for the research and development and application of AI medical technologies. He stressed that in the future, we will strengthen our cooperation with the Macau government and universities to jointly promote the application of AI technology in the medical and healthcare field, and help realise the goal of a healthy China.
At the seminar, Professor Zhu Haogang of Beihang University introduced the development of AI and deep learning technology in the past 80 years with the topic of ‘Multi-modal Large Models for Primary Healthcare Management’, and highlighted the importance of the application of multi-modal large models in the medical field. Dr Li Jing, Director of Beijing Hospital, presented ‘Precision Healthcare, 5G Borderline Remote Ultrasound for Health Defence’, explaining how 5G technology and AI-assisted ultrasound can be used to improve healthcare services in remote areas. Dr Wang Chuanyu, Deputy Chief Physician of Beijing Hospital, introduced the project entitled ‘5G Enabled Healthcare - Winning the New Future: 5G-based Handheld Remote Ultrasound Intelligent Diagnostic System’ and how the project has created a 5G-based handheld remote ultrasound intelligent diagnostic system.
In the roundtable forum held at the same venue, a number of experts from the Mainland and Macao participated in the seminar through online and offline means, and had in-depth exchanges and discussions with the guests on the issues of data security and privacy protection of AI in healthcare, as well as cross-regional healthcare collaboration, etc. The participants unanimously agreed that with the development of technology, there is a need for a more comprehensive and more efficient healthcare system. Participants unanimously agreed that with the advancement of technology, AI will play an increasingly important role in enhancing the quality of healthcare services and promoting the balanced distribution of healthcare resources, etc. Macao, as an important node in the Greater Bay Area, will continue to give full play to Macao's strengths, and contribute to the development of the national application of AI in healthcare technology.
During the event, Professor Haogang Zhu and his team of researchers introduced and demonstrated the advanced technology of ‘Cardiac Ultrasound Intelligent Navigation System’ to the guests. At present, the technology has reached a preliminary cooperation intention with Kiang Wu Hospital of Macao, and will have the opportunity to further promote cooperation with major medical institutions in Macao and even the Guangdong, Hong Kong and Macao Greater Bay Area, with a view to providing more high-quality and convenient healthcare services to the general public.
