The International Summit Forum on New-Type Power System and Green Energy Development, organised by the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), co-organised by CEM – Companhia de Electricidade de Macau, Dongfang Electronics Corporation and the City University of Macau, and organised and sponsored by Yantai Dongfang Wisdom Electric Co., Ltd., was held today on the Taipa campus of the City University of Macau. Bringing together more than 100 industry representatives, experts and scholars from Macau, the Chinese mainland and Sri Lanka, the forum centred on the development of new-type power systems and green energy, with a focus on digitalised and intelligent low-carbon power technologies, to jointly explore the future direction of the industry's green transformation. It also served to build an international platform for exchange and cooperation to support the green transition of Macau's power industry and the high-quality development of energy in the Greater Bay Area.
Present at and officiating the ribbon-cutting ceremony were Wang Mizhi, Deputy Director of the Department of Social Development of the Liaison Office of the Central People's Government in the Macao Special Administrative Region; Li Zhuxin, Director of the Department of Energy Development and Management of the Environmental Protection Bureau (DSPA); Li Xiaodong, President of IEEE Macau; Fang Zhengji, Chairman of Dongfang Electronics Corporation; Xie Jianguo, Chairman of Yantai Dongfang Wisdom Electric Co., Ltd. of the Dongfang Electronics Group; Zhou Wanlei, Vice Rector of the City University of Macau; Bernie Leong, Chairman of the Executive Committee of CEM; Tony Tsz Tun Kwok, Deputy Director of the Smart Grid and Innovation Department of CLP Power Hong Kong Limited; and Yan Ka Wing, Head of Construction and Maintenance of the Transmission and Distribution Department of The Hongkong Electric Company, Limited.
In his address, Li Xiaodong, President of IEEE Macau, said that global energy is undergoing a major transformation. Situated within the Greater Bay Area, Macau can serve as a demonstration platform for green technologies. He expressed the hope that the forum would build a bridge of exchange among the research, engineering and policy communities, helping mainland enterprises connect with overseas markets. Bernie Leong, Chairman of the Executive Committee of CEM, noted that as the country enters its 15th Five-Year Plan and Macau advances its Third Five-Year Plan, green and low-carbon transition is a development priority; building a safe, resilient and sustainable power system will underpin Macau's appropriately diversified economic development and the development of the Greater Bay Area. Fang Zhengji, Party Secretary, Chairman and General Manager of Dongfang Electronics Corporation, said that the energy transition is a common cause for all humanity. As an important bridge connecting China with Portuguese-speaking countries and linking up with global cooperation in energy innovation, Macau is expected to serve as a springboard for deepening technical exchanges with global peers and jointly building an industrial ecosystem.
The forum featured keynote presentations and a technical exchange session. During the keynote session, six experts shared their insights on green power development: Liu Zhichao, Principal Technical Expert of Yantai Dongfang Wisdom Electric Co., Ltd.; Edmond Etchri, Advisor to the Executive Committee of CEM; Eng. S.A.P.C. Siriwardana, Director of Division 1 (Projects and Heavy Maintenance) of EDL – Electricity Distribution Lanka (Private) Limited, Sri Lanka's national electricity distribution company; Tony Tsz Tun Kwok, Deputy Director of the Smart Grid and Innovation Department of CLP Power Hong Kong Limited; Yan Ka Wing, Head of Construction and Maintenance of the Transmission and Distribution Department of The Hongkong Electric Company, Limited; and Yuan Xiaoxian, Deputy Director of the Testing Department of Guangdong Research Institute of Testing, Inspection and Certification Group Co., Ltd. The presentations covered such topics as the development of new-type power systems and smart grids, low-carbon sustainable development pathways for power enterprises, digital grid transformation, improvements in the reliability of power distribution networks, and key testing technologies for medium- and low-voltage transmission and distribution equipment amid the large-scale integration of renewable energy.
The technical exchange session was moderated by Lai Shuying, Assistant Professor of the Faculty of Data Science of the City University of Macau. Participating experts engaged in in-depth discussions on the implementation pathways for differentiated energy-use scenarios, including urban public utilities, mining areas and islands, consolidating industry consensus, supporting the implementation of the "dual-carbon" strategy, and promoting the long-term green and high-quality development of the power industry.
The holding of this forum highlights the City University of Macau's responsibility and commitment in deepening research and innovation in the green energy field and actively participating in regional green development and international academic exchange. It not only established an important platform for the integration of industry, academia and research in the power sector at home and abroad, but also further consolidated Macau's position as a demonstration base for green technologies in the Guangdong–Hong Kong–Macao Greater Bay Area and a hub for international energy innovation cooperation, injecting innovative momentum into the high-quality, long-term development of the industry.
