The Third Workshop on Urban Emergency Rescue under the ASEAN Regional Forum (ARF), co-hosted by the People's Republic of China, the Lao People's Democratic Republic and Malaysia, was recently held in Nanning, Guangxi. Duan Junwei, Associate Professor of the Faculty of Data Science at the City University of Macau, was invited to attend the workshop and delivered a presentation titled "Research on Key Technologies of Unmanned Patrol Based on Broad Learning", sharing the team's latest research findings in artificial intelligence and intelligent emergency response.
The ASEAN Regional Forum is one of the important security cooperation mechanisms in the Asia-Pacific region. Under the theme "AI Empowering Urban Emergency Rescue", the workshop featured discussions on such topics as disaster risk monitoring and early warning and the building of urban safety resilience, fire rescue technologies and intelligent applications, new energy applications and safety risk prevention and control, and international humanitarian cooperation. Representatives from government departments, emergency management agencies, universities and research institutes of relevant countries and regions attended the workshop to jointly explore technological innovation and development directions in the field of urban emergency rescue in the age of artificial intelligence.
In his presentation, Duan Junwei, drawing on his team's recent research in artificial intelligence and intelligent unmanned systems, systematically introduced the application value of unmanned patrol technology in scenarios such as maritime fire rescue, disaster reconnaissance, risk early warning and emergency response, with a focus on the research progress on key technologies for unmanned patrol based on broad learning.
In the technical sharing session, the presentation centred on key issues including image fusion, object detection, object tracking and intelligent obstacle avoidance, introducing a series of research outcomes achieved by the team based on broad learning. By combining the advantages of the efficient training of broad learning with incremental learning, the related research has achieved positive results in enhancing the environmental perception capability, target recognition accuracy and autonomous decision-making efficiency of unmanned patrol systems.
At the workshop, Duan Junwei also introduced the unmanned surface vehicle (USV) platform and virtual simulation system independently developed by the team, and demonstrated the application results of the related technologies in scenarios such as water-area patrol, emergency search and rescue and smart firefighting. Participating experts engaged in in-depth exchanges on the application prospects and technology development trends of artificial intelligence in the field of emergency management.
In recent years, the City University of Macau has continued to promote innovative research in frontier fields such as artificial intelligence, big data and intelligent systems, actively serving the building of the Guangdong–Hong Kong–Macao Greater Bay Area international science and technology innovation centre and the national innovation-driven development strategy, and has developed distinctive research outcomes in areas including smart healthcare, intelligent decision-making, unmanned systems and interdisciplinary applications of artificial intelligence. This invitation to present at the relevant ARF thematic workshop further demonstrates the research strength and academic influence of the City University of Macau in the fields of artificial intelligence and intelligent emergency response.
