Vice Rector Zhou Wanlei of City University of Macau attended the Greater Bay Area Artificial Intelligence Industry Conference to discuss the risks and responses to artificial intelligence applications

The 2024 Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area Artificial Intelligence Industry Conference, guided by the Guangdong Provincial Department of Science and Technology and hosted by the Guangdong Artificial Intelligence Industry Association, opened in Nansha, Guangzhou on October 23, 2024. Zhou Wanlei, Vice Rector of the City University of Macau, Dean of the Faculty of Data Science, and Vice Rector of the Macau Science and Technology Association, was invited to attend the establishment ceremony of the "Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao (Nansha) Artificial Intelligence Industry Empowerment and Innovation Center" and participated in the acceleration the roundtable forum "General Artificial Intelligence Empowers Thousands of Industries" featured in-depth discussions on the theme with many experts and scholars from academia and industry.

During the forum, Vice Rector Zhou Wanlei expressed his views on the cyber risks brought about by the current application of artificial intelligence. He mentioned that data security is the main threat to the application of artificial intelligence. Artificial intelligence is needed to collect and process a large amount of data. Once the data involving personal information is leaked or abused, the consequences will be disastrous. Secondly, network security vulnerabilities are also a problem that cannot be ignored. The complexity of artificial intelligence systems may cause hacker attacks, resulting in serious consequences such as network paralysis and data loss. In addition, artificial intelligence may also be used for online fraud and malicious attacks, such as deceiving users through intelligently generated false information, or using artificial intelligence technology to launch phishing.

Although the cyber risks caused by the application of artificial intelligence are unavoidable, Vice Rector Zhou Wanlei also pointed out that strengthening supervision and taking protective measures are the key to facing many cyber threats. It is recommended that government departments and industries improve relevant laws and regulations to improve data protection awareness and technical level, strengthen network security detection and emergency response capabilities, so that artificial intelligence can better serve mankind.

During the interactive session, some audience members asked questions about City University of Macau’s postgraduate programmes in the field of artificial intelligence and the impact of artificial intelligence on future vocational education. Vice Rector Zhou Wanlei provided attentive answers.

With the theme of "Building the Foundation for General Artificial Intelligence to Empower Thousands of Industries" this conference aims to build a high-end communication platform integrating government, industry, academia, research, and commerce, promote the implementation and transformation of artificial intelligence scientific and technological achievements, and accelerate the empowerment of thousands of industries with artificial intelligence.
