1st batch of interns from FDS and the First Veterans Hospital of Guangdong Province have successfully completed their internship

In order to promote the deep integration of industry, academia, and research, and cultivate more talents with professional competence and innovation ability in the field of smart healthcare, the Faculty of Data Science at City University of Macau has jointly established an internship and training base with Guangdong Province's First Veterans Hospital. The first batch of internship tasks for interns have been successfully completed recently, and an internship summary meeting was held at Veterans Hospital, where each project team reported their achievements. Leaders Zeng Rong and Xiao Tiaohua from the Veterans Special Care Hospital, Vice Dean Wenjian Liu and Assistant Professor Gengshen Wu from the Faculty of Data Science at the City University of Macau, as well as heads of relevant departments and 14 interns from the hospital attended the meeting.

Internship Summary Meeting of Interns in the Faculty of Data Science: Group Photo

During the internship, the students were divided into four project groups: the elderly rehabilitation group based on the big language model, the MRI image research group studying in the imaging department, the lung CT group, and the otolaryngology image research group. Students go deep into various departments and provide useful suggestions for further improvement of medical services from the perspective of data science through the collection, processing, and analysis of relevant data. After nearly four weeks of project internship, the intern team reported their internship results in sequence according to the project team. Each intern representative introduced the project results with full spirit and confidence, fully demonstrating their ability to put theoretical knowledge into practice and solve practical problems, as well as the prospects of artificial intelligence application in the field of medical health.

Intern reports internship achievements

Vice Dean Wenjian Liu expressed his gratitude for the support and cooperation of the university leaders during this internship, as well as the individualized teaching and sharing of knowledge with the teachers. This cooperation is the first internship arrangement carried out since the signing of the agreement between the Faculty of Data Science at the City University of Macau and the First Veterans Hospital of Guangdong Province. The smooth implementation of the internship project has opened a new chapter in university medical cooperation. The Faculty of Data Science will continue to deepen cooperation with Guangdong Province's First Veterans Special Care Hospital, jointly cultivate practical talents that meet social needs, and output more project achievements that help the hospital's development.

Vice Dean Wenjian Liu's speech

Dean Rong Zeng pointed out that the smooth implementation of the internship program with the Faculty of Data Science at the City University of Macau is an important measure for the deep cooperation between hospitals and universities. During the internship, the interns actively delved into clinical practice to understand the operation and needs of the hospital, which led to the new achievements of artificial intelligence in the medical field showcased today. This internship not only provided practical training opportunities for interns at City University of Macau but also brought new vitality and innovative thinking to our institution. This internship experience will undoubtedly become an extremely valuable life asset for the interns, allowing them to learn how to collaborate as a team, communicate and coordinate effectively, and face challenges and pressure while solving practical problems. In the future, we welcome more students from City University of Macau to intern at our institution. Both sides will continue to deepen exchanges and cooperation and jointly promote the innovative application of artificial intelligence in the field of healthcare and talent cultivation.

Dean Rong Zeng made a concluding speech

Student feedback:

Yuan Wang, Student

Through this period of learning, I have deeply realized the importance and difficulty of combining medicine and engineering and have also become aware of the practical needs and importance of the medical field. This internship experience has inspired me to think more deeply about the potential application of data science in the field of healthcare. It has not only given me practical experience in the field of data science but also made me realize the value and role of data science in the medical field. I will continue to work hard to learn and apply the data science knowledge I have acquired to the field of healthcare, contributing my efforts to improving medical services and enhancing medical efficiency.

Yaokang Wang, Student

As a soon to be senior student, I was fortunate enough to participate in collaborative research work at the First Veterans Hospital in Guangdong Province. Here, I met medical workers from Baiyu Danxin, who made me understand the importance of medical engineering integration. They taught me that department needs should be the center, Veterans preferential treatment should be the guide, and artificial intelligence should be used to better serve the Veterans community with the spirit of reform and strengthening the hospital in the new era of science and technology.

Yuwen Xiang, Student

During my internship, I deeply experienced the huge difference between theory and practice. On campus, we learn theoretical knowledge, and this internship has given me the opportunity to apply this knowledge to practical work, deeply understand the real needs of medical staff in hospitals and also experience the real situation of hospital work on a daily basis. Participating in this project, from planning to execution, has benefited me greatly in every aspect. This experience not only enhanced my professional skills, but more importantly, achieved the integration of medicine and engineering. During this process, I realized that there is still much for me to learn, which makes me full of expectations and motivation for my future career.

Xuan Liu, Student

Thank you to the university and teachers for their trust, which allowed me to serve as the class monitor for this internship. I would also like to express my gratitude to the First Veterans Hospital in Guangdong Province for providing us with such a valuable internship opportunity. Here, we have gained a deep understanding of the actual needs and challenges in the healthcare industry, which will provide a solid foundation for training our artificial intelligence models. It is the careful guidance of the college teachers and the hard work of our classmates that have enabled us to achieve such fruitful results in this internship. Looking ahead to the future, we hope to continue to maintain close cooperation with hospitals and jointly promote the development of artificial intelligence in the medical field. I believe that with everyone's joint efforts, there will be more possibilities for the integration of smart healthcare and medical engineering!

Bingchen Dong, Student

We have felt a lot and learned a lot during this internship. We have learned how data is generated and how to collect and process it, which is a rare opportunity for students majoring in data science. Thank you very much to the university for giving us this internship opportunity, as well as to the Veterans Special Care Hospital for their care and attention.
