To build a bridge for science popularization cooperation between higher education and basic education, disseminate cutting-edge knowledge on artificial intelligence, and guide young people to develop a rational and positive understanding of technology, Associate Professor Hoi Io Kong of the Faculty of Data Science at City University of Macau was invited to visit Kao Yip Middle School in Macau on October 27, 2026. Assistant Professor Sun Jing of the Faculty of Data Science accompanied her and attended the event. She participated in the “Local Experts Enter Campus” science popularization activity, organized by the Macau Association for the Advancement of Science and Technology and partially sponsored by the Macao Foundation, and delivered a special science popularization lecture titled “The Double-Edged Sword of the 21st Century—Artificial Intelligence.” She shared cutting-edge AI knowledge with teachers and students at Kao Yip Middle School, in line with the faculty’s educational direction of promoting science popularization education and fulfilling its social responsibility.

As a disruptive frontier technology of the 21st century, artificial intelligence has thoroughly penetrated various fields of social development, daily life and production, and technological innovation. It is both a core driving force for advancing the times and a source of new challenges and reflections. This lecture focused on the dual nature of artificial intelligence. Taking into account the knowledge base and cognitive characteristics of senior secondary students, it clearly and accessibly examined the development history, core principles, application scenarios, and potential risks of artificial intelligence, guiding students to develop a rational understanding of the opportunities and challenges of AI technology.

In the future, the Faculty of Data Science at City University of Macau will continue to fulfill its social responsibility, deepen its work in science popularization and education, and carry out science popularization activities in schools and communities. It will build a collaborative education platform connecting universities, secondary schools, and primary schools, actively promote a positive scientific spirit, and disseminate cutting-edge scientific and technological knowledge. The faculty will also deepen cooperation with local secondary schools, leverage the scientific and technological development opportunities of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, help cultivate reserve talent for scientific and technological innovation, use its disciplinary strengths to empower the high-quality development of science popularization education, and help cultivate future Macau talent with scientific literacy.
