City University of Macau holds workshop for teachers and students of Escola Hou Kong
In order to help middle school students get to know the university campus, understand City University of Macau’s curriculum and featured subjects, and make plans for their future professional development, the City University of Macau recently received a delegation of senior students from Escola Hou Kong. The teachers and students visited the campus environment, exchanged views with teachers and students from the Faculty of Data Science, learned about the development of artificial intelligence, and participated in a smart health testing workshop.
Wenjian Liu, vice dean of the Faculty of Data Science, extended a warm welcome to the visiting teachers and students. He introduced the topic with recent hot topics, pointing out that the era in which the students live is being subverted and reshaped by AI, so no matter what major they choose in the future, everyone must embrace AI. Vice Dean Liu made several suggestions, hoping that students would maintain curiosity, continue to explore and learn in a rapidly changing world; focus on cultivating interdisciplinary learning interests; actively participate in various project practices to improve the ability to solve practical problems; learn to ‘think fast and slow’ and cultivate the ability to think deeply while quickly sorting out information; and stay kind and apply AI technology to things that are beneficial to mankind.
Weng Tak Kuok, programme coordinator of the Faculty of Data Science, shared his experience with the students as an alumnus of Escola Hou Kong and assistant professor of the school. He pointed out that the current AI big models are supported by big data, but due to the lack of imagination, there is still a lot of room for improvement. The core advantage of humans is creative thinking, which is their advantage over AI. In this era, he encouraged students to develop core competitiveness and make academic and career plans as early as possible, including cultivating data thinking, mastering AI-related skills, maintaining curiosity and learning ability, and focusing on interdisciplinary integration, so as to better cope with future opportunities and challenges.
Professor Wenjian Liu and Assistant Professor Weng Tak Kuok patiently answered students' questions on topics such as the application of artificial intelligence and the relationship between humans and AI.
Afterwards, the visiting students participated in the smart health monitoring workshop. City University of Macau’s doctoral student and founder of Regional Computer Co., Ltd. Kai Yan Kuok introduced the smart health monitoring system developed by his team and the main content of the workshop. The students conducted six health tests on the spot, including blood pressure, heart rate, blood oxygen saturation, electrocardiogram, body temperature, weight, etc., and understood their health status through the electronic test reports automatically generated by the system. The students said that this event gave them a deeper understanding of artificial intelligence and smart medical technology, stimulated their interest in scientific research, and provided useful reference for their future academic and career planning.
What the visiting students have to say
Cheok Sing Tam, a senior student at Escola Hou Kong
The most impressive part of this visit was the interaction with the professors. They discussed the development of artificial intelligence in depth and made us understand how AI can help in the process of social progress and change. The professor mentioned, "Artificial intelligence cannot completely replace humans. We must make good use of artificial intelligence, but the most important thing is that humans must remain kind." This sentence touched me deeply. In the future, I intend to study nursing. This event made me realize that in the era of rapid development of artificial intelligence, AI will become an important assistant for nursing workers. For example, it can assist nursing staff in counting and organizing medical data, including monitoring patients' blood sugar, blood pressure and other data, and analyzing whether there are any abnormal conditions. These are all effective helps that AI can provide to the nursing industry.
Ui Si Ug, a senior student at Escola Hou Kong
Through this visit, I have a deeper understanding of the current application of AI and its future development, and began to think about its impact on future employment and how to coexist with AI. This event gave me a more comprehensive understanding of AI. As a student who intends to study medicine in the future, I used to be worried about the involvement of AI in medical work, but this visit has dispelled my doubts and made me understand that making good use of AI will help humans rather than replace them.
Yuk Chun Lam, a second year student at Escola Hou Kong
This visit to City University of Macau gave me a strong academic atmosphere and the school facilities are also very complete. I was deeply impressed by the interactive question-and-answer session of the event. I benefited a lot from the professor's lively and interesting explanations and answers to my questions. In the future, I intend to work in education or literature. This event demonstrated the application of AI in the medical field, which made me deeply aware of its potential. The application of AI in education is also worthy of attention. We now have many AI-assisted assignments, which makes me realize that we will have more contact with AI in the future. This event gave me a deeper understanding of AI and taught me how to better use it to help us in our daily lives.
Hiu In Lai, a senior student at Escola Hou Kong
Participating in this City University of Macau workshop has taught me a lot and enriched my understanding of AI, prompting me to rethink the direction of my future university major. I am currently interested in studying nursing, and this event has made me more determined to develop in related fields in the future.
