CityU and Shandong Provincial Key Laboratory of Digital Diagnosis and Treatment of Thoracic Tumors Sign Cooperation Agreement to Solve Tumor Problems

In order to promote innovative breakthroughs in the field of smart healthcare, the City University of Macau and the Shandong Provincial Key Laboratory of Digital Diagnosis and Treatment of Thoracic Tumors recently signed a cooperation agreement at the 2025 Shandong-Hong Kong-Macao Science and Technology Innovation Cooperation Conference. The agreement will pool the wisdom of Shandong and Macau to jointly carry out the research and development of a digital diagnosis and treatment system for chest tumors. Liu Wenjian, Vice Dean of CityU’s Faculty of Data Science, and Xing Lumin, Executive Deputy Director of Shandong Provincial Key Laboratory of Digital Diagnosis and Treatment of Thoracic Tumors, signed the agreement on behalf of both parties, marking a new step in the cooperation between CityU and scientific research institutions in Shandong Province in artificial intelligence and smart healthcare.

Zhou Wanlei, Vice-President of CityU and Dean of the Faculty of Data Science, said that Shandong is an area rich in medical big data, and smart healthcare is the main application scenario of artificial intelligence that CityU focuses on building. The smart healthcare team of the Faculty of Data Science has more than a dozen outstanding artificial intelligence experts. This cooperation, relying on CityU’s breakthroughs in the field of artificial intelligence algorithms and Qianfoshan Hospital’s leading clinical medical practices, will jointly enhance the development of smart healthcare in Shandong and Macau, which is of epoch-making significance.

Deputy Director Xing Luming said that this cooperation project is of milestone significance and will achieve three major innovative breakthroughs in the field of smart healthcare: building a cross-domain heterogeneous medical data governance system to effectively solve the long-standing problem of data silos; establishing an AI-assisted diagnosis and treatment standard system that is mutually recognized between Shandong and Australia, setting a benchmark for the standardized application of medical AI technology; and creating a cross-border collaborative innovation ecosystem between Shandong and Australia of "clinical needs-technical breakthroughs-industrial transformation." Especially in terms of health benefits for the people, the project will focus on promoting the demonstration application of AI-assisted diagnostic technology in primary medical institutions. It is expected that the research and development results will benefit millions of patients within five years, significantly improve the early screening rate and diagnostic accuracy of major diseases, and inject new impetus into the construction of "Healthy Shandong".

CityU has a good cooperation foundation with Shandong Province and has established long-term cooperative relationships with the First Affiliated Hospital of Shandong First Medical University, Qilu University of Technology, etc., and has a highly consistent understanding and emphasis on data science, especially medical data. This cooperation is based on the previous research with the Shandong Provincial Key Laboratory of Digital Diagnosis and Treatment of Thoracic Tumors. The two parties and the Shandong Provincial Computing Center have formed a joint innovation body based on data, computing power and algorithms, and have built a digital innovation system to promote the development of digital diagnosis and treatment in Shandong Province. In the future, the two parties will set up joint laboratories in Macau and Jinan respectively. CityU will also send experts and scholars to local hospitals to work with medical staff to complete the research and development of digital diagnosis and treatment systems and promote the implementation of the project.
