On the afternoon of September 20, 2024, the Faculty of Data Science of City University of Macau held an academic lecture titled "Data Science Perspective During the Pandemic" at CLB201B. Professor Qingpeng Zhang from the Musketeers Foundation Institute of Data Science of Hong Kong University was invited to give the lecture. It was hosted by Professor Tianqing Zhu, Vice Dean of the Faculty of Data Science, City University of Macau.
Professor Qingpeng Zhang is an associate professor (tenured) at the Musketeers Foundation Data Science Institute of the University of Hong Kong and the Department of Pharmacology and Pharmacy, Ka Shing Li Faculty of Medicine, a visiting professor at the Department of Data Science, Faculty of Computing, City University of Hong Kong, and a senior researcher at the University of Hong Kong Shenzhen Research Institute, 2021-2022 Guangdong Province Overseas famous teacher (relying on Zhuhai Center for Disease Control and Prevention), founder of COMPASS Health Technology.
In the lecture, Professor Qingpeng Zhang deeply discussed the importance of the application of data science in the challenges brought by the global epidemic. He also shared the diverse sources of data during the epidemic, including government statistics, medical reports and social media data, emphasizing the importance of data Cleaning and pretreatment are critical in the analysis process. The professor deeply explored the application of machine learning in epidemic prediction and introduced how geographic information systems can help understand and respond to the spread of epidemics. It also conducts data analysis on the response strategies of various countries during the epidemic, analyzes the response speed and effectiveness of measures in different countries in the early stages of the epidemic, and points out that data-driven decision-making can significantly reduce the risk of epidemic spread.
The atmosphere of the lecture was intense. Teachers and students actively asked questions and had in-depth exchanges with Professor Zhang to discuss how data science works and is combined in various fields. This lecture provided valuable academic guidance and inspiration for teachers and students and promoted cross-field cooperation and exchanges. In the future, the Faculty of Data Science will continue to deepen cooperation with outstanding scholars and jointly promote the development of data science in various fields.
