Aligning Language Agents' Behaviours with Human Moral Norms


On the morning of May 23, 2024 (Thursday), the Faculty of Data Science of City University of Macau held an academic lecture titled "Aligning Language Agents' Behaviors with Human Moral Norms" in HG01. This lecture invited Professor Ling Chen, professor of the Faculty of Computer Science and Vice Coordinator of the Research Department of the University of Technology, Sydney, as the speaker, and was hosted by Professor Wanlei Zhou, Vice President of City University of Macau and Dean of the Faculty of Data Science. Guests at the lecture included the Vice Dean of the Faculty of Data Science. Professor Tianqing Zhu, Professor Jia Gu, Associate Professor Junwei Duan, Assistant Professor Chun Wang, Assistant Professor Xia Feng, Assistant Professor Wanxin Gao, and Assistant Professor Yingzhe Luo. 

 

Professor Ling Chen has 20 years of research experience in the field of machine learning and data mining and leads the Data Science and Knowledge Discovery Laboratory (The DSKD Lab) of the Australian Institute of Artificial Intelligence at the University of Technology, Sydney. Her research has been recognized by government agencies and industrial partners, including the Australian Research Council (ARC), and has received competitive funding and contract research support from agencies such as Facebook Research and TPG Telecom. In this lecture, Professor Ling Chen introduced three questions and focused on how to improve the task performance and ethical behavior of language agents in complex interaction tasks. The research team combined reinforcement learning and large-scale language models to explore ways to embed human ethics in language agents. 

 

Vice President Wanlei Zhou said at the end of the lecture that Professor Chen’s lecture expanded students’ knowledge and understanding in areas related to embedding human moral norms in language agents. By conducting such lectures, students are provided with cutting-edge ideas and understanding.
