Clustering method - application of machine learning in meteorological research

On January 31, 2024, the Faculty of Data Science successfully held a high-level academic lecture "Clustering Methods: Application of Machine Learning in Meteorological Research" and invited Zhenpeng Wu from the Postdoctoral Research Institute of the Department of Atmospheric and Oceanic Sciences at Peking University The doctor served as the guest speaker of this lecture. Dr. Wu’s main research direction is the evolution and mechanism of extreme weather and climate. He has participated in three National Natural Science Foundation research projects as a core member.

In this lecture, Dr. Zhenpeng Wu introduced in detail the wide application of machine learning technology, especially principal component analysis (PCA) and self-organizing map (SOM) in meteorological research. He explained in depth how these technologies can help scientists more comprehensively understand the complexity of the atmospheric system and how to accurately provide meteorological information to help people better predict and respond to the challenges of climate change.

Dr. Wu’s speech not only explained the importance of data science in modern analytics, but also demonstrated how these key technologies can be applied to solve real-world problems, especially in complex data environments. His sharing inspired participants’ enthusiasm for data science and sparked lively discussions and thinking.

This lecture not only provided valuable learning opportunities for the students and professionals present, but also further strengthened the position of the Faculty of Data Science of City University of Macau in the field of academic exchange and research.
