On November 10, 2023, the Faculty of Data Science of City University of Macau held an academic lecture titled "Application of Artificial Neural Networks in Tsunami Data Assimilation" in N202, and invited Dr. Yuchen Wang as the speaker.
Dr. Yuchen Wang is a Young Research Fellow of the Japan Agency for Marine-Earth Science and Technology and a researcher at the University of Tokyo. His main research directions are tsunami formation mechanism, tsunami early warning and data assimilation. In the past five years, he has published 31 SCI papers and served as a reviewer for more than 30 SCI journals such as Nature Communications and Journal of Geophysical Research: Solid Earth. In the lecture, Dr. Wang shared the research results of him and his team in the field of tsunami prediction - using a denoising autoencoder (DAE)-based model for coastal tsunami prediction. Its tsunami prediction rate for the 2016 Fukushima earthquake was as high as 90%. Dr. Wang not only discussed his research methods and results in depth but also encouraged students to actively participate in this important research area, while also emphasizing the importance of interdisciplinary collaboration.
After the lecture, the students present showed great enthusiasm, actively asked questions and had in-depth exchanges with Dr. Wang. This lecture is of great significance to the students' academic development path. It not only broadens their horizons but also stimulates their enthusiasm for academic research.
