The Faculty of Data Science Held a Briefing Session on Postgraduate Thesis for the 2024/2025 Academic Year



The Faculty of Data Science held the “Master's Thesis Orientation Meeting” and “Doctoral Thesis Orientation Meeting” for the 2024/2025 academic year on the morning and afternoon of August 16, 2024, respectively, at the Ho Yin Convention Center. The orientation was aimed at master's and doctoral students and provided guidance on thesis writing and an explanation of graduation requirements.  

On the morning, the Master's Thesis Orientation Meeting” was held. Vice Dean of the faculty, Associate Professor Wenjian Liu, Master's Programme Coordinator Assistant Professor Weng Tak Kuok, and faculty administrators attended the meeting to provide guidance. More than 115 master's students participated both online and offline. 

Vice Dean Wenjian Liu, Associate Professor, gave a speech at the Master's Thesis Orientation Meeting, focusing on the theme of “be hungry for knowledge and be humble”, and said that a continuous and humble attitude should be maintained in academic research. At the same time reminded the graduates that they must start writing their theses as soon as possible and actively contact their supervisors to ensure high-quality communication with them. 

Master's Programme Coordinator Assistant Professor Weng Tak Kuok gave a detailed explanation of the academic norms for master's students, including a detailed explanation of typical cases of academic misconduct, regulations on academic integrity at key universities at home and abroad, manifestations of academic misconduct, issues to be aware of when writing, and handling of charts and graphs. Students gained a deeper understanding of the structure and logic of thesis writing. Finally, important schedules, document lists and notes related to the doctorate were explained in detail. 

On the afternoon, the “Doctoral Thesis Orientation Meeting” was held. The meeting was attended and guided by Professor Tianqing Zhu, Vice Dean of the faculty, Associate Professor Zuobin Ying, Doctoral Programme Coordinator, and faculty administrators. More than 100 doctoral students participated online and offline. 

Vice Dean Professor Tianqing Zhu gave the doctoral students words of encouragement, telling them about his own doctoral studies and encouraging them to persevere on the path of scientific research. She also gave the doctoral students a deeper understanding of academic research and thesis writing. 
 

Associate Professor Zuobin Ying, Doctoral Programme Coordinator, gave a detailed explanation of the basic requirements, structure, logic, readability of the text, literature citations, abstract and research conclusions, and innovative pointed out the need to pay attention to the rigor of the thesis logic and the readability of the text, and to avoid plagiarism. Finally, the important dates, document checklist and notes related to the doctorate were explained in detail. 

This briefing deepened the understanding of doctoral and master's students of the requirements for degree dissertations and helped students understand the time nodes and corresponding procedures for submitting dissertations.
