The Faculty of Data Science held an "Academic Salon" in T106 on the afternoon of December 15, 2023, providing graduate students with an opportunity to communicate face-to-face with faculty tutors, allowing graduate students to communicate and share their learning experiences. The event invited Professor Wanlei Zhou, Vice President and Dean of the Faculty, Professor Tianqing Zhu, Vice Dean, Associate Professor Wenjian Liu, three Programme Coordinators and a group of faculty teachers to attend the meeting and conduct academic sharing. First of all, President Zhou shared the charm of data science and computer science with his own academic research experience, and encouraged graduate students to be brave enough to try and explore new research hotspots; Vice Dean Zhu shared her own scientific research and guidance experience, and encouraged graduate students to seize opportunities and actively To expand scientific research capabilities, Vice President Liu explained the significance of salon activities, reminded graduate students to seize the opportunity to communicate with teachers, and urged graduate students to prepare as early as possible.
Afterwards, Coordinator Zuobin Ying started from his own personal experience in graduate studies and talked about the reasons why students were confused about the basic requirements of scientific research papers. Assistant Professor Wanxin Gao, Assistant Professor Chi Fong Wong and Assistant Professor Xiaofeng Wu introduced themselves to the students. The research directions and current research topics allow graduate students to understand the topics and key points in different directions.
The faculty invited graduate student representatives from our college to share their experiences in postgraduate study. They include Huang Jiahao, a first-year master's student in Data Science, Wenjiang Huo, a first-year master's student in Computer Science, Qiang Zhang, a first-year Doctoral student in Data Science and Computer Science. Hao Ren, a first-year Doctoral student in Computer Science, shared his learning and research experiences.
After the sharing session, all the teachers and students enjoyed a variety of refreshments and talked about academic issues in a good atmosphere. This academic salon activity deepened the understanding between students, teachers and classmates, answered students’ academic questions about scientific research, and improved the academic enthusiasm of graduate students.
