Research Workshop organised by the Faculty of Data Science

Three Research Workshops were successfully organised between November and December 2024 to enhance mutual understanding among the faculty members of the Faculty of Data Science. These workshops provided a platform for faculty academic staff to share their research interests and results, and facilitated cross-disciplinary exchanges and collaborations. Each workshop focused on a specific theme, namely ‘Artificial Intelligence’, ‘Information Security’ and ‘Data Science’. Through this series of activities, the Faculty aims to build a closer academic community, stimulate innovative thinking and promote in-depth discussions on cutting-edge areas.

The first workshop on ‘Artificial Intelligence’ was chaired by Vice Dean Tianqing Zhu. In her opening remarks, she expressed her delight at the development of the Faculty's high-level professional faculty and highlighted the faculty's remarkable achievements in academic research and teaching innovation. Professor Honggang Zhang then shared the latest advances in networked large-scale language modelling, while Assistant Professor Xingfeng Li  introduced the application of affective computing, healthcare and well-being computing in the field of speech. Assistant Professor Jing Sun gave an in-depth presentation on the application and challenges of deep reinforcement learning in optimisation and decision making, and finally, Assistant Professor Peng Qin discussed semantic research on commercial text message exchange in heterogeneous scenarios.

In the second workshop on the topic of ‘Information Security’, Assistant Professor Shuai Zhou presented his research findings on the use of adversarial example evaluation models to reverse attacks. Assistant Professor Huajie Chen explored network security and privacy issues in the era of large-scale language modelling, while Assistant Professor Jianping Cai gave an in-depth talk on differential privacy protection in federal learning scenarios. Finally, Assistant Professor Hui Sun  presented the challenges of security and privacy in generative artificial intelligence.

In the third workshop themed ‘Data Science’, moderated by Associate Dean Wenjian Liu the wide range of applications of data science in various fields was introduced. Assistant Professor Yuchen Zhong discussed the application of differential equations in data science, Assistant Professor Wei Yu introduced the use of historical instructions for affine queue control, Assistant Professor Xiangjie Sui shared the visual quality assessment method for immersive media, and Assistant Professor Zhenglai Li introduced the Robust Multiview Clustering Algorithm and its application in data science.

The three research workshops of this academic year were successfully concluded with the enthusiastic participation of teachers, during which profound and inspiring exchanges of ideas took place. In her concluding remarks, Vice Dean Zhu expressed her hope that through these sharing sessions, the teachers could gain more inspirations and stimulate their innovative thinking, thus producing more high-quality research results and papers. She stressed that in the future, the Faculty will continue to organise such workshops to provide opportunities for every teacher to present their research and find partners to promote the further enhancement and development of their research work.
