The opening ceremony of the Experimental Class of Academician Fang Bin Xing (hereinafter referred to as the “Fang Class”) of City University of Macau for the 2024/2025 academic year and the Master Lecture of City University of Macau were held on October 9 at the Ho Hin Conference Center, Taipa Campus. Academician Fang Binxing, Honorary Dean and Professor of the School of Cyberspace Security at Guangzhou University, Zhou Wanlei and Han Wei, Vice Rector of City University of Macau, attended the opening ceremony. The event attracted more than 100 participants from CityU. Academician Fang Binxing was the keynote speaker of this session of the Master’s Lecture and gave a wonderful speech and sharing on the topic of “Fang Class Seminar: The Specific Practice of Feynman Learning Method”.
Vice Rector Zhou Wanlei extended a warm welcome to Academician Fang Binxing. Students who have been trained by Fang Class have made extraordinary achievements in paper presentations, further research and employment. City University of Macau will, as always, attach great importance to the teaching work of Fang Class.
In his speech, Academician Fang Binxing said that City University of Macau became the first Macau university to participate in the national demonstration class project of Fang class this year. A total of 39 universities at home and abroad participated in the demonstration class, with a total of six classes and more than 200 students participating. Academician Fang specifically mentioned the main comment system. He pointed out that Fang classes usually invite top experts and scholars in the field to serve as main commentators' own problems.
Zhu Tianqing, a representative of Fang Class tutors and vice dean of the Faculty of Data Science at City University of Macau, said in her speech that Fang Class at City University of Macau has successfully trained several master’s students in information security since its establishment in This year is the third session, and the trainees will become an important force in research in the field of information security. The square class is equipped with 13 outstanding instructors with rich international academic research and work experience, who are active at the forefront of information security research and provide professional guidance to students. She stressed that the value of the square class lies in the mutual achievement of teachers and students and expected to produce world-class research results in the future and translate them into the needs of Macau's industrial development.
In his speech, student representative Fu Xinbo expressed his sincere gratitude to Academician Fang Binxing for his care and guidance to the students at City University of Macau on behalf of all the freshmen of Fang class. He continued that he was honored and proud to be a member of the Fang Class in the context of accelerating global informatization and increasing cybersecurity challenges. Students in the Fang class have the opportunity to interact with experts and scholars in the field, learn with outstanding students from top universities, devote themselves to the most cutting-edge technology and research of cybersecurity, exercise their ability to apply what they have learned, and lay a solid foundation for their career development and research work foundation and contribute wisdom and strength to defend cyberspace security.
During the lecture, Academician Fang Binxing shared the pioneering work done by the Fang Class seminar in cultivating students' innovation and thinking from the introduction of Feynman's learning method with the theme of "Fang Class Seminar: The Specific Practice of Feynman Learning Method" and experiences and results in this process. Feynman learning method is essentially an output-based learning, the core idea is to form one's own perception by combing a concept or problem, and try to use one's own language to repeat, thereby summarizing the relevant issues, Academician Fang said , knowledge reconstruction, to achieve the effect of drawing inferences, and eventually can teach this concept to others. Academician Fang summarized this process into the source-seeking method, the entropy reduction method and the speculative method. Through constant explanation, discussion and reflection, he internalized the complex knowledge system as his own understanding, thereby achieving a deep mastery and innovative application of knowledge. This learning method not only improves learning efficiency but also fosters learners’ critical thinking and innovation abilities. The square class seminar hall is a course based on Feynman learning method, which trains students' expressive, learning, practical and innovative abilities through the four methods of source finding, entropy reduction, verification and speculation.
Academician Fang shared some key elements and successful experiences of the Fang Class seminar in the practice process. He mentioned five important roles: reporting students, counseling teachers, counseling students, questioning teachers and commenting teachers. Together, these five roles constitute a complete learning ecosystem that facilitates the transmission of knowledge and the generation of innovation.
