Academician Gao Wen


Academician Gao Wen is a distinguished expert in computer science and Member of the Chinese Academy of Engineering. He also serves as the academic leader of intelligent video processing technology in China. His main research areas cover artificial intelligence applications and multimedia technologies, focusing on computer vision, pattern recognition, image processing, multimedia data compression, multimodal interfaces and virtual reality. His research interests include video coding and analysis, sign language recognition and synthesis, face recognition, and digital libraries.

Academician Gao Wen has long devoted himself to research in image processing, pattern recognition, multimedia, and large-scale artificial intelligence systems. He led the establishment of AVS, China’s national audio and video coding standard system, enabling China’s digital video industry to achieve a landmark leap from a void in core technologies to international leadership. Furthermore, he participated in formulating China’s New Generation Artificial Intelligence Development Plan, presided over the formulation of the world’s first international standard for artificial intelligence technologies, and founded and headed the Strategic Alliance for Technological Innovation of the New Generation Artificial Intelligence Industry.

In academic research and industrial development, Academician Gao Wen has presided over the formulation of more than 20 international and domestic standards. He is the recipient of the Ho Leung Ho Lee Foundation Prize for Scientific and Technological Progress, one First Class National Technological Invention Award, as well as eight Second Class National Technological Invention Awards and National Science and Technology Progress Awards in total. He consistently promotes the industrial translation of academic achievements, effectively elevating China’s say in the formulation of international standards. He has made outstanding contributions to building an audio and video codec technology system with independent intellectual property rights.
