Academician Zheng Weimin is a leading authoritative scholar in the field of computer architecture in China. He has long engaged in frontier research covering high-performance computing, cluster computers, processor chip design, grid computing and large-capacity network storage, laying a vital foundation for technological upgrading and the independent development of domestic technologies in relevant fields. As the academic leader of the Institute of High Performance Computing, Academician Zheng focuses his core research on cluster computer architectures, CPU chip design, grid computing and high-performance storage systems, and leads his team to continuously tackle key technologies and develop related systems.
In the field of independent chip research and development, Academician Zheng Weimin led his research team through one year of intensive research and successfully developed THUMP107, a high-performance embedded CPU chip featuring the highest operating frequency in China at that time. The chip achieved a maximum main frequency of 500 MHz with the overall power consumption below 0.5 W, delivering both high performance and low power consumption and breaking the technical bottlenecks of domestic embedded processors back then. By July 2009, the Grid Computing Research Group led by him had obtained numerous independent intellectual property rights, and relevant technologies were promoted and applied in more than 20 key universities nationwide. The bioinformatics grid platform built by the team was officially put into regular operation with over 50,000 daily user visits. The self-developed grid middleware, grid monitoring system and cross-platform interconnection technologies have also been deployed on national science and technology infrastructure platforms, Shanghai Science and Technology Platform and relevant national defence research institutions, boasting extensive application scenarios and remarkable industrial and scientific research value.
Meanwhile, Academician Zheng Weimin has actively explored cutting-edge sectors including the metaverse and computing power infrastructure. On 31 March 2022, as Co-Chair of the Metaverse Industry Committee, he delivered a keynote speech entitled Full Steam Ahead for Innovative Metaverse Applications with Computing Power as the Foundation at the 3rd Metaverse Industry Forum. He conducted an in-depth analysis of how computing power systems underpin the development of the metaverse industry, providing important academic and industrial insights for the innovative growth of the digital economy and metaverse technologies.
