The Faculty of Data Science held an "Academic Salon Event" in the Ho Yin Conference Center HG02 on the afternoon of May 25, 2023, providing graduate students with an opportunity to communicate face-to-face with faculty tutors, allowing graduate students to communicate and share their learning experiences. The event invited Professor Wanlei Zhou, Vice President and Dean of the Faculty, Associate Professor Wenjian Liu, Vice Dean, Assistant Professor Zuobin Ying, Coordinator of Graduate Programme, Assistant Professor Weng Tak Kuok, Assistant Professor Hoi Io Kong, Assistant Professor Gengshen Wu, Assistant Professor Chi Fong Wong and administrative staff of the faculty to attend the event. Conference and academic sharing were held. A total of more than 80 graduate students participated in this academic salon.
First of all, President Zhou and Vice Dean Liu delivered speeches for this event. President Zhou used his personal experience in academic research and teaching to tell the students about the difficulties and key points of academic research, so that graduate students can have a deeper understanding of research and papers. Knowledge and understanding; Vice Dean Liu explained the significance of this salon activity and the direction in which graduate students need to work hard, reminded graduate students to seize the opportunity to communicate with teachers, and reminded graduate students to seize the time to prepare as early as possible.
Next, the graduate tutor shared his experience with the graduate students. Based on his own personal experience in graduate study, Director Ying told the reasons why students were confused about the basic requirements of scientific research papers. Assistant Professor Kuok Weng Tak, Assistant Professor Kong Hoi Io, and Assistant Professor Gengshen Wu. The teachers introduced their research direction and current scientific research topics to the students, allowing graduate students to learn the steps and key points of scientific research work.
The Faculty invited outstanding postgraduate students from the faculty to share their experiences in graduate studies. Zijie Pan, a first-year master's student, shared with the students his transition from undergraduate to postgraduate student. Runjie Yang, a second-year master's student, started from the research content of her dissertation to let the first-year master's students understand the degree. Regarding thesis requirements, framework and ideas, first-year doctoral student Linlin Wang shared her troubles and breakthroughs in doctoral studies. Finally, senior Yan Yan, a first-year doctoral student, started from the topic she was researching and shared with her classmates. They shared how to record their inspirations and how to write better articles.
Finally, Wenqi Li, chairperson of the IEEE City University of Macau Student Chapter, introduced the IEEE Student Chapter to everyone, allowing the students to learn about the IEEE Student Chapter organization in our university and strengthen the team. After the sharing session, all the teachers and students enjoyed a variety of refreshments and talked about academic issues in a good atmosphere. This academic salon activity deepened the understanding between students, teachers and classmates, answered students’ academic questions about scientific research, and improved the academic enthusiasm of graduate students.
