The Faculty of Data Science held the ‘Doctoral Session’ and the ‘Master's Session’ of the 2024/2025 Academic Year Graduate Student Supervisors Meeting in the afternoon of 25th September, 2024 respectively. This meeting provides a good platform for PhD and MSc students to have an in-depth communication with their supervisors, and helps them to know more about different academic fields and the research direction of each supervisor.
On 25th September, at 14:00, the ‘Doctoral Student Session’ of the 2024/2025 postgraduate Student Supervisors' Meeting will be held in Room T106, Professor Tianqing Zhu, Associate Dean (Research) of the Faculty, Associate Professor Wenjian Liu, Associate Dean (Teaching and Learning) of the Faculty, Associate Professor Zuobin Ying, Programme Coordinator of Doctoral Programmes, and other doctoral supervisors and administrative staff of the Faculty attended the meeting, which was attended by a total of 40 doctoral students.
Associate Professor Zuobin Ying, Programme Coordinator of Doctoral Programmes, gave a speech for this meeting, welcoming all the new Doctoral students and pointing out that the Faculty of Data Science is in a period of rapid development, with the number of Doctoral students increasing year by year, and correspondingly, the faculty is constantly introducing excellent Doctoral supervisors to join the faculty, which will help to provide a good match between the Doctoral students and their supervisors.
Then, in the session of supervisor's introduction, the doctoral supervisors gave a detailed introduction on their personal background, research fields, and requirements of student training in turn, and said that all doctoral students are welcome to have academic exchanges at any time.
On the same day, the ‘Master's Student Session’ was held at 15:30 in the classroom L105 for the 2024 /2025 academic year. The meeting was attended by more than 30 postgraduate supervisors and administrative staff, including Associate Professor Liu Wenjian, Associate Dean (Teaching and Learning) of the Faculty, Assistant Professor Weng Tak Kuok, Programme Coordinator of Master's Degree Programmes, and a total of 120 postgraduate students.
In his speech, Assistant Professor Weng Tak Kuok, Programme Coordinator of Master's Programme, expressed his hope that the supervisors could be the mentors and friends to guide the master students in their research path, and urged the students to focus on their own areas of expertise and to be aware of the cost of crossing the boundary too much.
In the mentor introduction session, the master's student mentors introduced their academic experience, research fields and academic achievements in turn, and in the process of introduction, they explained many new and advanced research projects, inviting all master's students to actively participate in them.
Choosing a tutor is a two-way process, and this meeting effectively promoted the communication between tutors and graduate students, and improved the distance between teachers and students, which laid a good foundation for graduate students to find a tutor who matches their research interests and for tutors to discover excellent research talents.
