FDS Held a Briefing Session on Postgraduate Thesis for the 25/26 Academic Year



 

At 10:00 a.m. on August 27, 2025, the Faculty of Data Science successfully held the "2025/2026 Academic Year Postgraduate Thesis Briefing Session" at HG02, Ho Yin Convention Center. Targeted at all postgraduates, the session offered guidance on thesis writing and explanations of graduation requirements, while sharing relevant information regarding thesis composition, review, and other related aspects. It laid a solid foundation for postgraduates to complete their studies smoothly and ensure the quality of their theses.

 

Associate Professor Wenjian Liu (Vice Dean of the Faculty), Associate Professor Weng Tak Kuok (Master’s Programme Coordinator), and Associate Professor Zuobin Ying (PhD Programme Coordinator) attended the event in person. Each of them delivered a sincere message to the students present and provided detailed guidance on issues that the students were curious about, such as thesis writing and publication. The briefing attracted over 100 postgraduates to attend offline and adopted an "online + offline" dual-mode approach to ensure that students in different learning scenarios could access the relevant information simultaneously.First, Associate Professor Wenjian Liu, Vice Dean, expressed his expectation that students would " Stay Hungry, Stay Foolish". He emphasized the need to maintain a spirit of continuous exploration and a modest, fact-seeking attitude in academic research. Meanwhile, he specially reminded graduates to take the initiative to contact their supervisors and ensure good communication with them.Associate Professor Zuobin Ying, PhD Programme Coordinator, conveyed his earnest expectations. In his message, he clearly delivered the belief that " Life is hard, welcome to the jungle". He encouraged everyone to accept that encountering difficulties is a normal part of academic research, and at the same time, to tackle experimental difficulties and break through theoretical barriers with a firm mindset, so as to achieve self-breakthrough and growth in academia. Later, he also provided detailed answers to common questions about thesis writing, covering all aspects thoroughly.Associate Professor Weng Tak Kuok, Master’s Programme Coordinator, first encouraged everyone with the words " Accumulate small steps over time, and you will traverse a thousand-mile journey". He gave a detailed explanation of academic norms for master’s students, including typical cases of academic misconduct, academic integrity regulations of key universities at home and abroad, manifestations of academic misconduct, key issues to note in thesis writing, and the handling of charts. This helped students gain a deeper understanding of the structure and logic of thesis writing.

 

Finally, faculty provided a detailed explanation of the important timelines for thesis submission, document checklists, and matters needing attention for postgraduates at all levels. This briefing deepened postgraduates’ understanding of thesis requirements, helping them clarify the deadlines for thesis submission and the corresponding procedures. It also wished every student success in their research, hoping that they could avoid the issues mentioned during the session in their subsequent thesis writing and defense processes, and complete their studies smoothly on schedule.
