1. Programme background
The Doctor of Philosophy in Computer Science Programme is a new programme offered by the Faculty of Data Science to coordinate with the development plan of the Macau Special Administrative Region and the national digital economy development strategic plan. It is designed for students who are interested in learning about computer science and technology, and in applying the knowledge of computer science to tackle complex scientific problems in the big data environment. Computer Science is a return to the roots of the computer science discipline, aiming to help students explore the fundamental logical principles of the field and better apply computers to solve cutting-edge scientific problems in the field and cross-cutting areas.
In this programme, students not only learn artificial intelligence (deep learning, federated learning, big data analysis, data mining, etc.) and information security (post-quantum cryptography, blockchain, public key cryptography, data privacy protection, etc.), but also have the opportunity to learn about cross-cutting disciplines, such as medicine, pharmaceuticals, innovation engineering, and finance. The programme focuses on developing students' problem-oriented and analytical skills, as well as their ability to apply their knowledge flexibly in different areas to solve complex and varied practical problems. The programme will provide students with a solid professional foundation, and graduates of the programme will not only be able to work in the field of machine learning but will also be able to contribute to the cross-cutting areas of meta-universe, digital twins, and blockchain applications.
2. Cultivation Objectives
This programme will develop students' abilities in the following three areas:
-
To develop students with a deeper and broader global worldview, the ability to communicate and co-operate across cultures, and to collaborate in solving complex problems and challenges faced by mankind, and the potential to become outstanding computer talents.
-
To be thinkers and doers, with a passion for lifelong learning and innovation, and the ability to communicate effectively. The faculty encourages doctoral students to actively participate in Nature Fund, Joint Fund and Key Research and Development projects applied by their supervisors and also encourages doctoral students to continue their post-doctoral research work after graduation.
-
It also nurtures professional talents in the fields of Data Science, Artificial Intelligence and Information Security who are patriotic (loving the country and Macau) and who are capable of combining theory and practice, analysis and application that are needed for the development of the country and Macau.
